Approach

I aim to create a warm and welcoming space that feels like coming home to yourself. Together we will attune to those parts of yourself that are in need of nurturing and care. The rhythm of a session may differ depending on what is coming up for you. At times we may slow down, tune in, and ground. There may be instances of contemplation, inquiry, and insight. Other moments may feel more experiential as we collaborate and practice new ways of thinking, being, and relating to others and self.

My integrative approach is flexible in order to be responsive to your needs and goals for counselling. I aim to balance directive and non-directive approaches. This means I will accompany you with curiosity as you explore parts of yourself, and I will also respectfully and collaboratively offer my knowledge and perspective.

Modalities I draw from:

  • Psychodynamic Therapy
  • Somatic Attachment Psychotherapy
  • Internal Family Systems
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy
  • Mindfulness

Although I draw from several effective modalities, the theoretical heart of my practice is psychodynamic. This is an insight-orientated approach that explores relational and emotional patterns influencing your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Psychodynamic therapy is depth-orientated and assumes that chronic problems are rooted in the unconscious mind, and are often hidden for your psychological protection. Psychodynamic therapy invites you to look into your past in order to identify patterns and bring unconscious material into your conscious awareness. The aim is to identify and change the recurring patterns that may no longer be benefiting your relationship with yourself and others.

Other schools of thought that influence my practice include systems theory, feminist therapy, and an anti-oppressive framework. These frameworks acknowledge external systemic issues and injustices that influence mental health and wellbeing.
